EYFS - Red Class (Mrs Rowbotham & Miss Houlihan)
What can you do to help your child's progress?
Attendance: Our days are jam packed to ensure that your child becomes secure in their learning and meets the end of Key Stage expectations. Frequent late arrivals and absences leaves gaps in your child's learning which impacts what they are able to achieve.
Please support us by:
- Ensuring that your child comes to school everyday.
- Ensure that your child arrives in class at 8:40am.
- Where possible avoid appointments during the school day.
- Avoid taking holidays during term time.
Homework: Homework will be set weekly. This will be a short task for our young children to consolidate something we are working on at school.
There will also be a play based homework posted on the dojos from #50 things to do before you're 5. Here is a little more info about it:
Less Screen Time, More Play Time
In today’s digital world, screens are everywhere. Too much screen time is having a detrimental effect on young children’s development.
The ‘Less Screen Time, More Play Time’ focuses on reducing screen time for children under five by encouraging parents to engage in play. 50 Things to Do Before You’re Five is an ideal tool designed to promote practical suggestions for screen-free playful activities such as, puddle jumping, blowing bubbles and sharing stories. These low or no cost ideas are perfect for families to enjoy together at home or in their local community!

Reading:
- Children should develop the habit of reading at home daily.
- Listen to your child read; if they have a wordless book then let them make up the story in their own words. This oral composition is so important for developing their speech, reading and writing skills.
- Children will begin to bring a 'ditty' or reading book home that they have been working on in phonics. Support them to become fluent in reading this by practising daily.
- On a Friday children will bring home a library book- this book is for you to read to them for pleasure. Reading books like this to them will support their vocabulary development and listening skills.
RWI Phonics
At St Johns C.E Primary School we follow the RWI phonic scheme. Your children have been taught all the Set 1 sounds and are learning to read words. Our aim was for all children to be able to orally blend by Christmas! If your child is still working on this, then please watch the Fred Talk videos posted weekly on the dojos.
The majority of children are now able to orally blend sounds and we are so proud of how their reading skills have developed. Please read on to find out how you can help your child become a confident and fluent reader.
Set One Sounds
Each sound is linked to a picture hook and short rhyme to help the children learn and remember them. Please practise these sounds with your children on a regular basis.

Learning to Blend
Your child will learn to read words containing Set 1 Speed Sounds by blending sounds together to create words. We call this ‘Fred Talk’.
m-a-t mat
c-a-t cat
g-o-t got
f-i-sh fish
s-p-o-t spot
b-e-s-t best
s-p-l-a-sh splash
Please click on the link below to see how to support your child to learn to blend at home.
Reading words
In Reception the children practise their reading at lots of different points during the day. We encourage the children to use Fred talk and then say the word. If a word has a diagraph in such as sh, ch, th or ng we say special friends, Fred talk read the word e.g. if the child saw the word chip we would ask them to identify the special friend "ch" then we would say Fred talk "ch - i - p" and then say read the word "chip".
By the end of Reception we expect the children to be able to do this confidently and read some words on sight. Please click on the links below to see all the different words we will be teaching your child to read including the speedy ones we expect them to be able to just read by the end of the year.

In Red Class we use the White Rose Maths guidance to support the teaching of Maths to ensure our children reach the Early Learning Goal at the end of the year.
Below are some of the examples of questions and challenges that we will be exploring this half term. If you have any questions regarding this please don't hesitate to speak to a member of the Early Years team.
In Red Class every half term we set new objectives that we are going to be covering in RE, PSCHE, Music and PE. Please see the links below to find out what your child will be learning this half term.
You can find information about what your child will be learning in PE below. To see what unit your child is learning each half term, please visit the Subject Curriculum page.
