Year 1 - Orange Class (Mrs Brunton & Mr Toon)
Welcome to Year One
PE days are Thursday and Friday and children need to come to school in their PE kit. Please make sure that earrings are removed or covered by plasters or tape.
Reading books are changed every Tuesday and new books will be sent home on a Wednesday.
Our weekly spelling test takes place on a Tuesday and new spellings will be sent home on a Wednesday for the children to practise. On their new spelling sheet will be your child's score and any words they spelt incorrect so they can practise these at home.
Library book day is on a Wednesday. Please make sure your child brings their library book into school every Wednesday morning.

Number Bonds
Every Friday we take part in a fun Math's challenge where we practise answering questions using a number bond knowledge. Please find a picture of one of our Beat That Challenges which includes all of the number bonds we should be able to quickly recall by the end of Year One.
In RWI we refer to words that can't be decoded using Fred talk as red words. The picture below shows all of the red words the children are expected to read on sight and spell correctly by the end of Year One.
In Year One the children take part in a phonic screening test where they will be asked to read 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The website www.phonicsplay.co.uk is a fun website with games that allow the children to practise reading a mix of real and nonsense words. If you have any questions about the screening test please speak to a member of the Orange Class team.
Geography
In Geography the children learn about the different continents and the names of the different oceans. We have enjoyed using this song to help us remember the seven different continents with Miss Khan.
